Dwight Gayle is open to returning to Newcastle United at the end of the season once his loan deal at West Brom expires, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the Magpies are also keeping the door open for the 28-year-old striker to return to St James’ Park after refusing to insert a buy-out clause in his temporary agreement with the Baggies.

It is understood that the ex-Crystal Palace star still owns property in the North-East and although he is fully focused on trying to win promotion with West Brom, he is looking towards having a future with Newcastle.

OPINION

It really depends on what league Newcastle United are in to decide whether or not Gayle should remain at St James’ Park. While the Magpies’ form has improved lately and they have started to move away from the relegation zone, a return to the Championship is still a possibility and that is when they will definitely need Gayle. However if they stay up, they should really try and offload the 28-year-old because a Championship side will pay a big fee for someone who is so prolific in the second-tier. Gayle has scored nine goals and supplied five assists in 15 appearances across all competitions for the Baggies since joining them on loan. They are the top scorers in England’s top four tiers and that is largely down to his influence up front. Newcastle need that if they go down, and a lot of other clubs will need that if they stay up. It is only November though and a lot can change between now and the end of the striker’s loan at West Brom.
