Gateshead have joined the hunt to sign Newcastle United forward Elias Sorensen on loan, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the Heeds would be interested in signing Sorensen, 19, if Rafa Benitez was willing to let the Dane drop down to the National League to earn first team experience.

Gateshead are not the only North-East club eyeing up a move for Sorensen with the Hartlepool Mail recently reporting that Hartlepool United are also plotting a swoop for the in-form teenager.

Good move for Newcastle?

Sorensen has been in terrific form for Newcastle’s Under-23s this season with 10 goals in 10 appearances in Premier League 2.

That is the form of someone who is not only knocking on the door of a Premier League club’s first team, but it is also the form of someone who is way too good to be loaned out to the National League.

Non-league football is nowhere near good enough for Sorensen, there are surely League One or even Championship clubs who would take him on loan in January.

Just because Gateshead is nearby doesn’t mean that he should be loaned there and the Magpies should rebuff any any advances by the Heed.

Likely to happen?

As Gateshead is so close, Newcastle may think that they could loan Sorensen to them and also keep in close contact, having him train with the club every now and then.

It makes sense on that regard but Sorsensen will surely be eyed up by a second or third tier side, which means that this move to the International Stadium is unlikely.
