Gary Neville has admitted that he would want Manchester United to sign Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk if he could pick any defender in the world for his former club to sign.

Van Dijk, 27, has been in stunning form since signing for the Reds in January, helping Jurgen Klopp’s defence transform from a laughing stock into one that is had to break down for even some of the best sides in Europe.

And with Jose Mourinho’s defence at Old Trafford a complete and utter shambles, Neville claims that the Netherlands international or Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos would be his picks to add to that position at United.

“Ramos or van Dijk,” Neville said via his personal Twitter account on Thursday when he was asked what defender he would sign.

OPINION

Here’s a question, why didn’t Man United sign van Dijk? It was clear that he wanted leave Southampton last year, but even though the Red Devils had more money to spend, they felt as though they would be just fine with Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Eric Bailly. Liverpool’s defence was a shambles before they signed van Dijk and the addition of Allison Becker in goals in the summer has made it one of the best in Europe. Meanwhile at Old Trafford, Mourinho’s defence is all over the place. There’s no balance and no quality among his back-line and not even David De Gea can help things. If Man United signed van Dijk they would be in the top-four right now, there’s no doubt about it. If Liverpool didn’t sign him, they might be where United are right now, struggling in mid-table, conceding more goals than second-from-bottom Newcastle.
