Everton are in hot pursuit of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele after sending chief scout Martyn Glover to keep close tabs on him, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that Marcel Brands and Marco Silva want to add to their midfield options in 2019, meaning that a swoop to sign the £40million-rated France international is on the cards for the next two transfer windows.

It is understood that the Toffees would face a lot of competition if they made a move to sign Ndombele but Brands and Silva are eager to add a “powerful, box-to-box” midfielder to the squad.

Good move for Everton?

As good as Idrissa Gana Gueye has been for Everton, Ndombele would be a massive upgrade on him and he could be the perfect midfield partner for a playmaker like Andre Gomes.

Ndombele has been in superb form for Lyon and has been linked to some top clubs in worldwide football, so if the Blues could seal a shock swoop for him next year, it would be some what of a coup for them.

£40million would be a lot of money but it would certainly be worth the plunge as it could take them a lot closer to the Premier League’s top six.

Likely to happen?

The Liverpool Echo claims that Ndombele would be wanted by a lot of clubs next year, so that instantly puts Everton at a disadvantage because there will be some teams that play Champions League football regularly that would be able to offer him plenty of first team football.

Silva needs to lead his team to a high finish this season otherwise he will struggle to sign top-class players next year.

Farhad Moshiri may have the money to fund a major splurge on transfers, but he won’t be able to do that if players don’t see Goodison Park as a promising move for their careers.
