There is no doubt that Everton conducted some of the smartest transfer business in the Premier League this summer.

From bringing in the sensational Richarlison to recruiting the classy Andre Gomes, the Toffees outdid themselves this off season with a host of productive purchases.

One signing that has gone under the radar has been Lucas Digne who, despite the lack of fanfare, has turned out to be one of the signings of the season.

Leighton Baines is an Everton icon, a Toffees mainstay who has served the club with distinction throughout his many years at Goodison Park. However, the success of Digne has effectively ended the veteran’s career on Merseyside.

Digne has been so good, almost from the word go, that there is simply no need for Baines to remain at the club beyond the end of the season.

Replacing someone of Baines’ calibre should be difficult, but Digne has made it look extraordinarily easy with a number of top class performances.

His most recent dazzling display was in the team’s goalless draw with Chelsea last time out, where he proved to be a constant menace for the Blues defenders, while dealing with the threat of winger Willian with no difficulty whatsoever.

The 25-year-old, an £18million addition from Barcelona (BBC Sport) finally appears to be fulfilling his potential, and it’s credit to Marco Silva for believing in him despite two disappointing spells with Paris Saint-Germain and the Spanish champions.

The Portuguese boss is bringing out the best in the Frenchman, and Everton are reaping the benefits. While Richarlison has been the most obviously successful of the team’s summer recruits, Digne’s significant contribution shouldn’t be forgotten.
