Nottingham Forest are involved in a five-way tug of war for Queens Park Rangers defender Angel Rangel, according to journalist David Anderson.

The Daily Mirror reporter revealed the news on his personal Twitter account, claiming that Forest hold an interest in the soon-to-be free agent, whose deal at Loftus Road expires in January.

It is understood that Aitor Karanka’s side will be battling Rangel’s current club QPR, as well as Norwich City, DC United and New York City for the 36-year-old.

The former Swansea City star signed for Steve McClaren’s side on a short term deal in the summer and has gone on to impress in his 13 appearances for the team this season.

Good move for Forest?

This is an interesting one for Forest. Rangel has proven himself, over the years, to be a fine player who will work extremely hard for his team. He served Swansea with distinction for many years and was a key figure in their rise up the divisions. However, Forest already have a right back who is excelling for the club in Tendayi Darikwa. If Rangel were to be brought in as high end cover for the Zimbabwe international then that’s all well and good, but Forest don’t need to be paying through the nose for him when they have someone playing as well as Darikwa. Rangel is a decent player who will do a good job on a short term basis, but Karanka shouldn’t worry too much about the success or failure of this move.

Likely to happen?

It’s going to be difficult for Forest to bring Rangel in. QPR will surely have the upper hand in negotiations, while high flying Norwich present a problem as well. Plus, if Rangel fancies a move stateside in the twilight of his career there will be no shortage of suitors for him. This is probably one that won’t come off for Forest.
