Leeds United attacking midfielder Izzy Brown is set to continue his comeback from his serious injury blow in Friday’s Premier League Cup clash against Newcastle United after missing Monday’s under-23 outing against Sheffield United, according to journalist Adam Pope.

The Chelsea loanee had made his comeback from a serious cruciate ligament issue with 45 minutes for the reserves last week and was expected to play the full 90 minutes against the Blades, but was instead missing completely from both the starting XI and substitutes.

BBC reporter Pope claims on his personal Twitter account that he has been told that the 21-year-old would play against Newcastle on Friday instead, with the first team set to play against Reading on Tuesday evening.

Opinion

Phew! Fans would have been seriously worried that the youngster had suffered some sort of recurrence of his serious injury blow so this should allay those fears – although the question will of course be why he was not given a chance against Sheffield United’s under-23s. He needs as much game time as he can right now as he continues to try and get to a level of fitness which allows him to play in the Championship and fans might have to wait a while until he is given a first team chance by Marcelo Bielsa as he continues to play reserve football. His injury setback was a serious one and it will take careful management to make sure there are no further issues before he steps back out onto a pitch for the senior side. Still, the Elland Road faithful have been patient so far and will no doubt be itching to see what he can bring to the side in their hunt for a promotion spot this season.
