The physio for Wales signalled that Aston Villa defender James Chester needed to come off immediately in their 2-1 defeat to Denmark on Friday evening, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The newspaper reporter claims on his personal Twitter account that the 29-year-old, who has been a mainstay for the Villans this season with 16 appearances and three goals to his name in the Championship, suffered a problem with his knee while on international duty.

The most worrying sight for Villa fans was reportedly the fact that the physio immediately signalled to manager Ryan Giggs and the rest of the bench that the centre back needed replacing straight away.

Opinion

While Villa have done pretty well when it comes to injuries this season, the last thing they needed was to see their star centre back suffer a blow while on international duty. Manager Dean Smith already had a distinct lack of options at the heart of his defence and so to see his main man at the back a serious doubt will be a real worry for the boss. The Villans find themselves in this sticky situation courtesy of former manager Steve Bruce, who not only failed to sign a new centre back when options were limited but allowed Tommy Elphick, an experienced performer in the Championship, to leave on loan. It looked like a huge mistake at the time and with Chester now facing a spell on the sidelines the calamity is clear as day. As for who steps in to the back if Chester really is out for some time, only Smith will know, but with no real natural options of any experience, it will no doubt have to be a makeshift switch for someone. Not what they need when they are chasing a top six finish this season.
