A section of Aston Villa fans took to Twitter to lay into Alan Hutton for his performance in the team’s 1-0 Championship defeat to QPR on Friday night.

The veteran right-back, 33, played the full 90 minutes at Loftus Road in the televised clash as Dean Smith’s new side fell to their second consecutive defeat and to 16th place in the table.

Many Villa supporters were distinctly unimpressed with the display from Hutton, with comments including “fire into the sun” and “embarrassing”.

COMMENTARY:

The Scottish Cafu? Or evidence of Villa’s mediocrity? Judging by social media last night and today, Hutton is regarded as the latter by Villa fans as their side slumped to back-to-back defeats in the first week of Smith’s reign. The new manager has kept faith with the veteran defender, a key plank of the team under ex-boss Steve Bruce. Hutton has played left-back, right-back and even centre-back this season, filling in, helping out, doing a job, and never giving anything other than his best. But the former Tottenham and Rangers man turns 34 in November and is getting it in the neck from supporters who admire his efforts but claim his ability is not of the level required for a club with genuine promotion ambitions. Certainly, Villa’s defence looks a bit of a rabble, and Bruce’s failure to adequately address it over the summer and in previous transfer windows was key to his eventual and unlamented dismissal. Many fans have had enough of Hutton and want him replaced.
