West Brom are in the hunt to sign a new defender in a bid to boost the club’s bid for promotion back to the Premier League this season, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that technical director Luke Dowling wants to hire a new chief scout in the next two weeks, who can help unearth a new defender for Darren Moore’s first team and potentially find new younger talent to add to the squad.

West Brom are top scorers in the Championship with 31 goals in 12 games, however their defence has been leaky, with their 17 conceded being the second-worst in the top-half after Sheffield Wednesday.

OPINION

For all of West Brom’s amazing attacking play, their defending has been shambolic at times and recent results against Sheffield Wednesday and Reading have shown that Moore must sign one or even two new centre-backs in January. Top of their agenda should be a left-footed centre-back who is a bit of a ball-player because currently, Kyle Bartley is having a nightmare sitting on the left-hand side of back three due to his lack of comfort on the ball and inability to use his left foot. Fulham’s Tim Ream is someone who ticks all these boxes but Dowling will obviously want a number of potential options who could play in this role. West Brom need extra depth at centre-back anyway as aside from the three who start every week, Manchester City loanee Tosin Adarabioyo is the only other central defender and his performances have been hit-and-miss. Sort of the defence and the Baggies are bound to bounce back into the Premier League this season.
