West Brom went into Wednesday night’s game knowing that a win would put them back on top of the Championship regardless of other results.
Instead, everything that could go wrong went wrong and they lost 4-1 to Frank Lampard’s Derby County.
It started in the 10th minute when Jack Marriott scored the opener and Derby were four up before Jay Rodriguez scored a consolation.
COMMENTARY
It was a wretched performance all round from West Brom on Wednesday night and fans took to Twitter to vent their frustration at Chris Brunt. He wasn’t the only culprit on a bleak night at The Hawthorns but he was an easy target. Darren Moore is playing him as a centre midfield and fans have been criticisng this choice all season. The 33-year-old really struggles there and was poor again last night. And, while some fans obviously still hold some loyalty towards a faithful servant to the club, their patience is wearing thin. Some fans want him dropped from the side and others actually think it’s time for him to leave the club. West Brom dropped to fourth after this result but it’s the manner of defeat, at home to one of their promotion rivals, that has got the fans so worried. Brunt and his teammates have a chance to put things right at The Hawthorns on Saturday against Blackburn but some fans would prefer to see him dropped to the bench.
Here are the best reactions to Brunt’s performance on Wednesday night:
Bartley, Adarabioyo, Brunt…..not good enough #WBA

Morrison looked a better bet in his few minutes on than either of the two who started in middle tonight! Moore really has to stop using Brunt in starting line up – it's painful to watch & sad to see! He still till has a role off bench though #WBA

Can’t bring myself to criticise the bloke but Chris Brunt in the starting 11 has to stop! Been a jewel at the heart of many good seasons for us but enough is enough now #wba #wbafc

This is the naivety which concerns me, how can he not see that Brunt is not a CM and this system doesn’t suit our defenders. Its been the same all season except in games against poorer teams our attack has bailed us out. Teams have worked us out before our own coaches have ?#wba https://t.co/wbPkmYOo0I

I’d like to see more of field without brunt in our midfield. He’s been a good servant, but along with some others looks out of his depth in the side #wba

Dear Chris Brunt. Thanks for memories. Just go now as it’s getting embarrassing #wba
