Tottenham announced that they have extended the contract of goalkeeper Alfie Whiteman until 2020 and fans are absolutely delighted.

In fact some want to see Michel Vorm or Hugo Lloris, or both of them, sold after the new deal was announced.

The 20-year-old Under-23 player has made the bench for recent first-team games against Brighton and Huddersfield after injuries to Michel Vorm and Hugo Lloris.

He is yet to make his debut for Mauricio Pochettino though.

The news of his contract extension was announced on the official Tottenham Twitter page on Monday morning and fans have flocked onto Twitter to congratulate him and criticise the current first-teamers.

OPINION

As one Tottenham fan said, Whiteman is a Tottenham boy through and through, and fans would love to see him in the first-team. That still seems to be a way off though, with Hugo Lloris, Michel Vorm and Paulo Gazzaniga ahead of him in Pochettinio’s pecking order. This new contract extension will give him a chance to prove that he can step up. Meanwhile, current one and two keepers Lloris and Vorm continue to get criticised by the fans. Lloris is a top goalkeeper but he’s also quite erratic – as he proved in the recent Champions League game with Barcelona. He’s made a number of high-profile mistakes but it’s unlikely that he’s going to lose his gloves anytime soon. It is fair to say that the spotlight is on him now though, and many more big mistakes could see him under threat. Fans shouldn’t get excited though – he’s not going to lose his place to Whiteman anytime soon.

Here are the best reactions to his new contract from delighted Tottenham fans:
