Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton believes that Rangers’ decision to back manager Steven Gerrard in the transfer market has been key to their positive start to the season.

The Ibrox side sit fifth in the Scottish Premiership at present but have looked visibly improved after Gerrard’s overhaul of the squad this summer.

And Sutton feels that their transfer business has been key: “A big conundrum for Steven Gerrard was if he was going to be backed by the board – but he has and he’s been allowed to bring in 14 or 15 players,” he wrote for the Sportsman.

“He’s changed things around and while it will take time to gel, in a short space of time there is a totally different mindset. They still have a lot of work to do, but the signs are good from across the city,” he finished.

OPINION

Sutton is spot on, here. The Rangers squad that Gerrard inherited when he signed on at Ibrox was vastly different to the one that’s looked so impressive under his leadership this term. He’s brought in the likes of Connor Goldson, Kyle Lafferty, Jon Flanagan and Allan McGregor, all of whom have been key players for the side this term. The club’s success in Europe and, to a slightly lesser extent, in domestic football owes a massive debt to the club’s transfer business, and the club’s decision to back Gerrard financially. It’s easy to forget that the Liverpool legend is in his first managerial job, and so for the Gers hierarchy to provide him with the sort of funds they did shows a lot of trust in him. The powers that be didn’t have to open their chequebooks as wide as they did, but in doing so they have ensured that the team are back on the right path, and hot on the heels of Heart of Midlothian and Celtic at the top of the table.
