22-year-old Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips has been earmarked for a shock call-up to the senior England side, according to TeamTalk.

They claim that a whole host of Premier League sides have been watching the youngster after Leeds have been put on the map by new manager Marcelo Bielsa.

Everton are leading the running for his signature but Arsenal and Tottenham are also said to have scouted him.

The report also claims that Phillips could be set for s shock call-up to the England squad – he is one of a number of Championship players that Gareth Southgate views as capable of making the step up.

Phillips hasn’t featured for the England youth set-ups.

OPINION

Wow, We had to check the date before writing this story, just to make sure it wasn’t April 1. Phillips has been good this season but a move to Everton and a call-up to the England squad? That seems unlikely, and it would represent a shock as he’s not been mentioned in relation to the England set-up before. But the midfielder is still young and has been putting in shifts and showing that he’s mature after accepting being hauled off by his manager twice in the first-half of games. That’s less to do with Phillips and more to do with tactics and formation, but Phillips has handled it well. He’s certainly not a player that Leeds would want to lose in January, after already waving goodbye to Ronaldo Vieira. If the Premier League big boys come calling though it would be hard to keep them off and it might well come down to the player. If Leeds are top of the league and looking like a shoe-in for promotion by January, he might decide that his career would be better served by playing in the top-flight under Bielsa.
