Southampton are in the hunt to sign Roma centre-forward Edin Dzeko as they aim to solve their shortage of goals, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims that Crystal Palace and Cardiff are also interested in signing the 32-year-old, who won two Premier League titles during his time with Manchester City.

It is understood that the 6ft 4 (transfermarkt) colossus is keen on returning to England, however he has confirmed that he is currently happy in the Italian capital with Roma.

“It’s probably too late for me to return to the Premier League, but you never know: we’ll see,” he said, as quoted by the Mirror.

“I love English football, I played in the Premier League for four-and-a-half years and enjoyed it a lot, even if I’m happy at Roma right now.”

Good move for Southampton?

Mark Hughes needs to find a way to get his players scoring more goals and Dzeko would be a very handy addition in the January transfer window if he decides to call it a day on his time at Roma.

Even though he is 32-years-old, the Bosnia and Herzegovina international has scored five goals in nine appearances across all competitions this term and in the 2017/18 campaign, he was named in the Champions League squad of the season.

Roma would probably demand a decent fee for Dzeko, but he is definitely worth it from the Saints’ point of view.

Likely to happen?

Dzeko would more than likely want to head to the Premier League but he has made it clear that he does not want to leave Roma right now and a return to these shores is probably off the cards right now.

Southampton do not really go after players like Dzeko as well and if anyone was to sign him, Palace would more than likely be frontrunners.
