18-year-old Rangers centre-back Lewis Mayo has signed a new contract that will see him stay at the club until 2021.

Mayo has come up through the youth ranks at Rangers and has played for the reserve side.

He played 90 minutes in the first round of the Challenge Cup in August which ended in a 2-1 loss to Falkirk.

The news of the contract extension was broken on the official Rangers Youth Academy Twitter page on Tuesday afternoon.

OPINION

Mayo is starting to get noticed and this long new contract, that will take him through until he’s 21, show that Rangers think he has a future at Ibrox. As well as representing the Rangers reserves, he’s played for three different levels of the Scotland youth side, featuring in all three games in last year’s Under-17 European Championships in May. His side narrowly missed out on a place in the knockout rounds and Mayo was busy passing his exams at the same time. It’s a fantastic time to be a young player trying to make inroads at Rangers. Steven Gerrard has completely changed the cub’s fortunes and there’s a real sense of optimism around the club and among the supporters at the moment. With Gerrard’s links to the Liverpool youth sides, players like Mayo will feel there’s a real chance of progression. This new contract gives him the time to prove that he’s got what it takes to succeed in the Scottish top-flight and we wish him all the best of luck.
