Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that the fans might have seen the last of defender Marvin Compper after he fell down the pecking order at Parkhead having been offered the chance to leave the club.

The German international, who has one cap under his belt, has already been a rarely-seen figure for the Celtic Park faithful with just one appearance for the club since signing back in the January transfer window, injuries plaguing his time with the Bhoys.

Speaking about the centre back, Rodgers confirmed he had offered him the chance to exit the club but that he decided to stay, and insisted that there was no guarantee he would play again.

He told the Daily Record: “I’m not sure (if he’ll get his chance)It was made clear to him if he wanted to play regularly in the last few years of his career then he’d have to move.He decided he wanted to stay and you have to respect his decision.

“But there are players who have jumped ahead of him in the queue and it’s clear his game time is going to be limited. When Marvin came to the club last year we wanted to use his experience. He was injured in that first six months.

“I made it clear to him in the summer there were players who came in during that six months and they had jumped ahead of him.”

Opinion

You can be sure that Celtic fans will not be losing too much sleep over Compper never making another appearance for the club, for his impact has been minimal to say the least. One outing is an appalling record for someone signed back at the start of the year, and his injury record suggests that his body is starting to give up on him. At 33, it is clear he is coming to the end of his career and the chance to play for Celtic this season was obviously in his mind when he was offered the opportunity to leave in summer. However he has not managed to do that as yet and with so many other options ahead of him in the pecking order it seems seriously unlikely – barring a major crisis at the back – that he will ever feature for the Hoops again.
