Former Celtic great Davie Provan has launched a scathing attack on Hoops captain Scott Brown, calling him ‘massively overrated’.

The 5ft 8in Scotland international [Source: Transfermarkt] was linked with a move to Australian side Western Melbourne recently, according to the Daily Mail.

And Provan clearly feels the Bhoys would get on fine without their skipper: “I’ve never bought into the Scott Brown hype,” he wrote in the Scottish Sun. “Hugely overrated if you ask me. Too many square passes, not enough goals or discipline.

“But you don’t play the number of games he has for Celtic and Scotland unless you have something about you. Given what he’s shown over 11 years at Celtic, he’ll deservedly take his place in the pantheon of the club’s outstanding players. Currently linked with a move to Australia, he’s earned the right to wind down any way he wants.”

OPINION

At 33 years of age it’s getting to that time where Brown needs to start considering his future. He is still an important player and a crucial part of this Celtic team, but he should be thinking about his family and what’s best for them. Would more money and a better quality of life in Australia be worth it for him at this stage of his career? Only he can answer that, but he’s going to be continually linked with moves like this as he advances in age. As for Provan labelling the midfielder overrated, that is far too harsh. Brown isn’t a spectacular player but that’s not his job. He’s not in the team to score goals, as Provan seems to think he is, he’s there to be a solid wall in front of his team’s backline. He has a point with the lack of discipline but you make peace with that side of his game when you select Brown. He’s been a terrific servant to Celtic and for a club legend to attack him like this is very surprising.
