Steven Gerrard has hinted that Rangers could be ready to recall loan star Greg Docherty in the January window.

The central midfielder, 22, has impressed at League One club Shrewsbury Town, who he joined in the summer on a season-long loan.

Asked about Docherty at his media conference on Wednesday, as quoted by the official Rangers Twitter account, Gerrard explained the club will open talks in the coming weeks about their loanees including the “shining” ex-Hamilton ace.

OPINION

There is plenty of central midfield talent at Rangers, including main man Lassana Coulibaly, Scotland international Ryan Jack, fit-again Graham Dorrans and the versatile Andy Halliday, not to mention man-for-all-seasons Scott Arfield. But there is a sense that the Light Blues may flag in the second half of the campaign if they do not have an injection of talent in the winter window. Docherty is certainly a whirlwind of energy. A player with impressive stamina and the ability to pick a pass as well as beat an opposition player,  the former 800m champion has made a huge impression at Shrewsbury, who admittedly play at a lower level than his parent club. He has weighed in with goals – three of them plus two assists from 12 matches in all competitions this season – and a series of performances that demonstrate his progression this season. Docherty wouldn’t play as often for Rangers but might be a valuable asset as the managers come thick and fast.
