Sky Sports pundit Kris Commons has criticised Rangers midfielder Jordan Rossiter for being at fault for the one goal conceded at Hamilton and said that moment led to his substitution.

The Gers secured all three points at the Hope CBD Stadium with a 4-1 win – with Ryan Kent, James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos among the goals – but Commons singled out the the 21-year-old for the player being largely at fault for the one goal that was put past them.

He adds that it is no coincidence that the 5ft 10in [Transfermarkt] ace was substituted not long after the strike from Steven Boyd, criticising him for doing “nothing”.

“Rossiter, for me, he does nothing here. He kind of loses his footing. It was no coincidence, I think, that just a couple of minutes after that goal went in, he ended up getting substituted,” he told Sky Sports in the coverage of the game [21/10].

OPINION

Yes, Hamilton should not have been given the space to score the goal in the way that they did – but it is rather unfair to single out Rossiter for being at fault for conceding it. Yes, he should have done a bit better in terms of dealing with the threat – but he will no doubt be rather content with his performance following the battle he has had with injury at the Ibrox. Some would argue that it was a huge gamble from Steven Gerrard to select Rossiter to play on the artificial pitch at Hamilton, but he coped surprisingly well over the 82 minutes that he played – and he will be hoping that he will warrant more regular football over the course of the season. He deserves to be playing on a regular basis – but it is important to recognise that he is still young, and still has room to improve and make the odd mistake.
