Stoke are ready to get rid of Scottish midfielder Charlie Adam in the January transfer window, according to the Sun, and Steven Gerrard must be at the front of the queue to snap him up.

In Sunday’s print edition of the Sun (page 61), their transfer expert Alan Nixon claims that Adam is surplus to requirements after coming close to leaving in the summer.

The report claims that the 32-year-old has been squeezed out of the team this season, with just one Championship appearance and has been demoted to the reserves.

He’s out of contract in the summer and Stoke are reported to be ready to let him leave for a small fee or might even release him with a pay-off.

That should be enough to alert Gerrard to the man who came up through the youth ranks at Rangers, and has played 76 games for the Ibrox club, scoring 15 goals and registering 10 assists.

At 32 he’s still got plenty for the Premiership and he would provide experience that would be invaluable to the crop of brilliant youngsters that Gerrard.

Gerrard will know all about Adam after playing with him at Liverpool in the 2011/12 season and his goals from midfield could prove invaluable in the second-half of the season.

Adam would surely jump at the chance to play another huge role at Rangers and could really help in what looks like being a genuine title shot this season.

Rangers fans would love to see him back again too and Ibrox would roar if Gerrard can seal his signature.

If he can get him for free he could prove to be one of the best deals of the January window.
