Rangers made huge mistake over Bates

OPINION

Former Rangers defender David Bates is reportedly on the radars of a number of Premier League clubs, including big-hitters Arsenal.

Everton, Watford, Leciester and Southampton are also credited with an interest in the 22-year-old enforcer, who joined Hamburg on a free from Rangers over the summer.

Bates initially joined Rangers on loan from Raith Rovers before signing on a permanent deal almost two years ago.

That contract ran out over the summer and Rangers couldn’t persuade him to sign a new deal.

That seems to have worked out pretty well for the defender but not so much for Rangers, who may well miss out on a substantial fee for the player.

He’s on a contract with Hamburg until 2022.

Bates was blasted by then manager Graeme Murty for his decision to leave, saying that he was chasing the money.

However, Bates hit back and said that he left because Rangers wouldn’t make a decision about his future and that Hamburg made him feel wanted.

If that’s the case, it could well be a hugely expensive mistake that a club like Rangers just can’t afford to make.

Luckily, we don’t think it would happen under Gerrard.

Murty tried his best in a very demanding role after Pedro Caixinha messed things up completely.

But he has to take the blame for the Bates shambles and for the money it will cost the club if he makes his dream move to the Premier League.
