A section of Rangers fans have taken to Twitter to praise Umar Sadiq for his performance in the 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Sadiq, 21, made a rare start for the Light Blues as Steven Gerrard named him in his starting line-up due to Alfredo Morelos’ suspension and Kyle Lafferty’s ineligibility.

Since arriving on loan from Roma in the summer, Sadiq has been somewhat of an enigma to Rangers fans, but some were impressed by what he had to show in the BetFred Cup semi-final this weekend.

COMMENTARY:

Have Rangers fans found a new cult hero in the 21-year-old Roma loanee? Sadiq has done little of note since he was signed by Gerrard in the summer transfer window. The Nigerian had played just three times across all competitions before Sunday’s appearance against Aberdeen and many fans would have thought he would have his loan deal torn up in January because of how pointless it was having him at Ibrox. However they were impressed by what he had to offer against the Dons. While the lacks technical abilities, the striker’s tall, imposing frame did cause issues for Derek McInnes’ defenders and maybe he would make a good strike partner for Alfredo Morelos if Gerrard ever wants to experiment with that in upcoming fixtures, especially with Kyle Lafferty failing to impress. Some Gers fans still found him to be a bit clumsy though, but what do you expect from someone so tall?
