Sky Sports pundit David Prutton was left shocked by West Brom’s inability to score against Wigan in their defeat to Wigan Athletic as he predicts a goal-fest against Derby County on Wednesday.

The Baggies are the top scorers in the Championship by eight goals but were unable to find a way through the Latics on Saturday, as a Josh Windass goal secured all three points for the home side.

Prutton admitted his surprise to see Darren Moore’s side stopped in their tracks and while he expects the goals to flow once again, he is expecting the result to go the way of the Rams when they meet in mid-week.

Predicting a 3-2 thriller, Prutton wrote in his column for Sky Sports: “While I have been impressed with Wigan this season I must admit I was a little surprised to see them beat West Brom, and keep them from scoring as well! Only Middlesbrough had done that to Darren Moore’s side before Saturday.

“Derby got a great win against Sheffield United and they have a massive week to come. After this game they head to Middlesbrough then Chelsea in the Carabao Cup. There should be goals at The Hawthorns and it’s tough to call, but I’m going to tip the Rams to edge it.”

Opinion

Prutton would not have been the only one surprised to see the Baggies come away not only without a point but without a goal to their name, in what was just the second shutout against Moore and his men. Derby have been by no means as prolific as West Brom, with just 17 goals to the 31 netted by the Hawthorns outfit, so Prutton’s prediction for them to score three away from home seems a little left field. Still, it promises to be an exciting game for the neutral and one which could have the fans of both sides biting their finger nails until the final whistle. Both would love to get one over their promotion rivals and keep in touch with the league leaders while pushing the other to the lions of the chasing pack. Of course, with Prutton’s prediction of a goal-fest to treat those watching on, it will of course end up being a 0-0 bore draw – it is just the way the football gods work.
