Stan Collymore has named Wolves duo Rui Patricio and Matt Doherty in his team of the week as he raved about their performances in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Doherty scored the winner for the newly-promoted side as they continued their brilliant start to life back in the Premier League by moving to seventh place with 15 points from their first eight games.

Collymore has now recognised the duo’s displays against Palace by naming them in his team of the week, highlighting their respective contributions to the victory.

In his column for the Mirror, he said: “The Portugal No.1 made a couple of excellent stops for Wolves in their win at Crystal Palace, including a brilliant double-save in the second period. Has four clean sheets in his last five games.”

“Doherty impressed in the promotion season and is going from strength-to-strength in the Premier League playing as a wing-back. Helped nullify Wilf Zaha as well as scoring a well-taken winner to continue recent excellent form.”

OPINION

Collymore is right in highlighting the performance of Patricio and Doherty against Palace, with both having vital contributions for Wolves at either end of the pitch. Doherty has been mightily impressive at right wing-back for Wolves all season, and his first goal in the Premier League is just reward for that form. It was a good finish as well from the flyer as he squeezed the ball past Wayne Hennessey to seal the three points. Patricio is another who has had a brilliant season so far for the club since his move from Sporting Lisbon, with the Portugal international bringing world-class experience to the role at Molineux. His pedigree has shown on countless occasions already, and bringing in someone of his calibre was a shrewd move from club bosses following promotion. There is already talk of Wolves being the best promoted side ever in the history of the division, and while there is an argument to be had there, Collymore’s Nottingham Forest side of 1994-95 will take some beating after their third-placed finish.
