West Ham United’s defence has been pretty solid since they brought in the likes of Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop – so you think it would make sense for them to stick to their guns for now.

However, that may not be the case as the Mirror have reported that the Hammers are considering a move for Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill in January.

When you think of Chelsea, you immediately think of the world-class players that they have amongst their ranks – but Cahill does not spring up in that category.

It is safe to say that he has had his glory days in the Premier League, but now – especially since John Terry left the club – he has not been the same player.

The Champions League winner is starting to show his age, and the fact that he is continuously overlooked by Blues’ boss Maurizio Sarri shows that he is not as good as he used to be.

This is why the Irons must avoid a raid for him at all costs, as he is not a player who can cope with the speed and competitiveness of the top flight any more – he is just an accident waiting to happen.

Anyway, seeming as Balbuena and Diop have forged a rather steady partnership, who is Manuel Pellegrini to go and break that up?

Like they say, there is no point in trying to fix something if it is not broke – and bringing in the ex-Premier League winner would essentially be pointless.

West Ham have got it good with the central defensive pairing that they have, and fans would agree that it does not need changing in the slightest.

There is a reason why Cahill has not been featuring for Chelsea, so why would West Ham want him?

Yes, there is no denying that he has a vast amount of experience behind him – but that means nothing if you are unable to cope with the attack that is thrown at you.

A swoop for the 32-year-old must be out of the question – even if he is out of contract next summer.
