The Carabao Cup isn’t shown much respect by Premier League managers.

Weakened teams battle it out to the semi-final stage and sometimes beyond, but it’s still a trophy. And Tottenham are in desperate need of a trophy.

Talking on talkSPORT (Alan Brazil Breakfast Show, 6am), Tim Sherwood made a bizarre claim that might look laughable on the surface, but actually holds a lot of water.

He said that Tottenham’s Carabao Cup clash next Wednesday is more important than their Monday night game against Man City in the Premier League.

“There’s only four trophies on offer and when you’ve got a front-runner like Man City in the Premier League, it’s going to be tough,” Sherwood said.

“West Ham game is their best chance of going and getting a cup. Once they’ve tasted that I think more will come. The most important game for me in the next week is in the Carabao Cup.

“I know it’s a lesser cup but those players need to win.”

We’re sure that Tottenham fans won’t agree with this. In fact they’re likely to laugh Sherwood out of the building.

But here’s a question. Despite their fast start, do Tottenham fans really think they’ve got a chance of winning the Premier League?

Man City and even Liverpool look a step above. And you can forget about Tottenham winning the Champions League after last night.

The West Ham game would take them one step closer to a cup that is eminently winnable.

Winning begets winning is the argument and we think it has a lot of merit.
