West Ham United midfielder Carlos Sanchez has had surgery on the knee injury he suffered against Macclesfield Town last month, according to journalist Sam Inkersole.

The Football London writer revealed the news on his personal Twitter account, with the development happening around a month since the 5ft 11in Colombia international [Source: Transfermarkt] first suffered the injury.

“West Ham midfielder Carlos Sanchez has now had surgery on his knee, he had the procedure done in Barcelona,” Inkersole said.

“The Colombian is expected to be out for five to six months. Picked up the injury in the Carabao Cup victory over Macclesfield last month,” he finished.

OPINION

It seems strange that it took the Hammers so long to get Sanchez’s surgery sorted. This is an injury that happened about a month ago, yet he’s only just having surgery? That seems slightly bizarre. Doubtless there’s a very good reason for it, but you would’ve expected Sanchez to have gone under the knife before now. Clearly the club see this as a long term injury that they don’t want to rush, otherwise he would’ve had surgery sooner. It always appeared as if the veteran midfielder had suffered a serious setback and surgery has obviously done little to reverse that fact. He will still miss five to six months, essentially the entirety of the rest of the season, and the former Aston Villa man is now a non factor for manager Manuel Pellegrini moving forward. Whether the 32-year-old’s West Ham career can recover from this remains to be seen, but at least he has had surgery now and is beginning his journey back to full fitness.
