A section of Wales fans took to Twitter to lay into Ashley Williams for his performance for the national team in their 4-1 friendly defeat to Spain on Thursday night.

The Everton defender was hauled off at half-time as Ryan Giggs’ side were taught a footballing lesson by Spain’s second string in Cardiff.

Many supporters were unhappy that Williams is still in the starting XI.

COMMENTARY:

It’s safe to say Williams should avoid his mentions on social media after last night’s match. The centre-back has been a great servant for Wales but he looked every day of his 34 years against a visiting side that ran rings around the hosts. Handed the captain’s armband and selected as one of three centre-backs in a 3-4-3 formation, Williams did not look so much off the pace, as miles below the standard required for elite football. Loaned out to Championship side Stoke City for the 2018-19 season, where he has started six out of a possible 12 league matches, Williams has been playing recently after a spell on the bench, but it is questionable why he started ahead of the more mobile James Chester against such a fluent attacking side. The Villa defender did eventually replace him at half-time, but Wales were already 3-0 down and purely in damage limitation mode.
