Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks has slammed the club’s current fixture pile up, labelling it ‘ridiculous’.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City on Monday night and will return to action against West Ham United on Wednesday night, before facing Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

And Winks is not happy with the congestion: “We have got three games in five days which is ridiculous really, in terms of the schedule,” he told the Telegraph.

“Especially playing two games after a game tonight, so it is going to be tough for us. We have got to dig in, we have got a big squad, got players that can play two games in two days because we are a fit squad and a fit bunch of players.”

OPINION

Winks is right, the amount of games they have in a short period of time is, frankly, absurd. Facing the Premier League champions on Monday before taking on an improving West Ham team on Wednesday is a huge challenge for this depleted Tottenham team. Luckily for Pochettino he has the likes of Dele Alli returning to full fitness, but it’s still going to be a massive ask for the Argentinian and his squad. Th exertion of playing on the horrific Wembley Stadium pitch on Monday, followed by a tough cup tie against their local rivals and a Premier League clash with a terrific Wolves team is simply too much and should not really be happening. Would it not have been possible for Spurs to play Wolves on Sunday instead of Saturday, just to give them a modicum of rest? However, that’s not happened and the club simply has to muddle on and try to make the most of this ridiculous situation.
