Former Tottenham favourite Chris Waddle has called on goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris to ‘get his head screwed back on’ after several high-profile errors in recent months.

The France international has not been on top form for club or country over the past six months or so, making multiple glaring errors which have cost Tottenham on occasion.

Waddle has now claimed that mainstay Lloris is suffering from a hangover after leading France to the trophy in Russia over the summer, and urged him to work hard to get back to his best soon.

In a Q&A for SportingBet, Waddle said: “Lloris came back from the World Cup on a high and his form is suffering from a bit of a hangover. He needs to get his head screwed back on for Tottenham because the World Cup is history, now it’s all about performing week in and week out in the Premier League.

“I’m sure Lloris will be back to his best and he’s experienced enough to know what has to be done.”

OPINION

This is pretty scathing from Waddle in many ways, who does not believe that Lloris has turned up for Tottenham this season so far. It is hard to disagree with him considering the regularity with which errors seem to be coming, with his early mistake against Barcelona in the Champions League giving them a mountain to climb against the La Liga giants. Lloris is clearly the best goalkeeper at Spurs and is so highly regarded by his teammates, but should this form continue then questions will continue to be asked. Paulo Gazzaniga really impressed during his spell playing in place of Lloris and Michel Vorm when they were both injured, and he will be pushing for a starting spot if the mistakes keep coming. At the moment there is no chance that Lloris’ starting spot is under threat, but he does need to up his game as Waddle says. If Tottenham want to win something this season then they will need a solid presence between the sticks.
