Tottenham’s first match at their new stadium has now been delayed until next year, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Spurs hierarchy are targeting the White Hart Lane grand opening with the fixture against Manchester United on 13 January.

It has been widely reported in recent weeks, including by the Daily Telegraph, that Tottenham had intended to hold the first match at the venue on 15 December when they host Burnley in the Premier League.

OPINION

Better late than never? Spurs have not yet formally given a new date for the first match after failing to meet their original mid-September deadline. Clearly, the club want all safety checks done and signed off, and everything copperbottomed, before they’re willing to go public with the official launch. What is known is that the Burnley clash on 15 December has not been chosen by broadcasters as a live match (neither are the December home matches against Wolves and Bournemouth), which could be a factor in Tottenham instead targeted the more glamorous and high profile Man United fixture, which will be. Spurs have not made the mistake of holding themselves hostage to fortune over the first match, and supporters have had to get used to being patient over their first experience of the magnificent-looking new structure. Patience is having to prove a very important virtue among the fanbase.
