Tottenham have offered a “succulent” contract to Christian Eriksen in a bid to keep him at the club, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish publication claim Spurs have tabled a deal to the Denmark international that is “almost” as big as the record-breaking six-year deal signed by Harry Kane in June.

Mundo Deportivo report it is “no coincidence” that Eriksen has failed to put pen to paper on the contract at a time when Real Madrid are showing strong interest in signing him as a replacement for Luka Modric.

OPINION

Given that Kane signed a six-year contract shortly before the World Cup that was widely reported to be worth £200,000-a-week to make him comfortably the highest paid player in Spurs’ history, it can be assumed from the Mundo Deportivo report that Eriksen has been offered a contract of near-similar money. Or can it? The Catalan newspaper are not necessarily the most reliable, particularly when reporting about England-based players targeted by Real Madrid. Mundo Deportivo also do not divulge how long ago Tottenham tabled the deal to Eriksen. Is he refusing to sign it? Or, has it only just be offered? Or, are negotiations still at the preliminary stage? One thing is for sure, Eriksen is a brilliant player who Tottenham can’t afford to lose. He is probably second only to Kane in terms of the most important at the club. With his contract due to expire in the summer of 2020, it is vital Spurs tie him to an extension.
