Tottenham have penned their game with Burnley on December 15th as the match they want to open their new stadium with after the ongoing setbacks with construction, according to journalist Alasdair Gold.

The Football.London writer claims in his latest update on the website about the club’s new ground that insiders involved in the construction process have told him that the Lilywhites are looking at opening the likes of the club shop before the end of this month, and that the debut match is currently set to be against the Clarets in the Christmas period.

Spurs have been forced to return to Wembley as a temporary solution while their new home is completed, while the Stadium MK has been used for their League Cup game as a result of scheduling conflicts.

Opinion

While the Spurs fans might have a date set for their new stadium, they have been made to wait a seriously long time, and it will be more a sense of relief than enjoyment when the day finally comes around. It is still over two months until the supposed date anyway, meaning plenty of time to continue watching at Wembley – which has resulted in fan numbers dropping at some games due to the requirements set out in the terms of the deal. It is also hardly a marquee game to christen the opening of the stadium with – rather than it being against one of the Premier League’s big boys, it is against Burnley – although perhaps the board might feel as though it is a winnable one and that it could get the club off to the perfect start in their new surroundings. Any which way, at least it seems as though the day is getting closer that the fans can forget about Wembley and return to north London to finally visit their new permanent home.
