Lothar Matthaus has claimed it is likely Harry Kane has a “gentleman’s agreement” with Daniel Levy to quit Tottenham if there was a “truly serious offer on the table”.

Speaking to the Sun, the Germany all-time great revealed he is a big admirer of the Spurs talisman and hailed him as one of the outstanding players in the world.

Matthaus believes Real Madrid are the only club in the world Kane can leave Tottenham for and that the move would need to happen in the next two years.

“It would have to be something special for him to leave the club,” the World Cup winner told the Sun. “But if it’s going to happen, it will have to be soon. He’s 25 now. If he does not go in the next two years, by the time he is 27, he will never leave.

“If he did, Real are the only club that would be right for him. Real shine brighter than any other club in the world.

“I know he loves Spurs. You can tell by the way he talks about the club. It would be different if Harry went to Daniel Levy and said he REALLY wanted to play for Real.

“Levy knows what Harry’s done for the club. It wouldn’t surprise me if there is an understanding, a gentleman’s agreement, between them. He would not have anything written into his contract. He is not that sort of player.

“But if he knocked on Daniel’s door, at the right time, and there was a truly serious offer on the table, it may be different.”

OPINION

Kane’s relationship with Tottenham and their supporters is different to that of an overseas player or one who was not brought up through the ranks. It is like Steven Gerrard at Liverpool or Ryan Giggs at Manchester United. There is an affiliation that goes beyond career progression, pay cheques and hoarding trophies. Kane is different to Gareth Bale and Luka Modric, former Spurs stars who outgrew White Hart Lane and were dazzled by the bright lights of Real. Levy could not stop them leaving. He would hope to have a better chance with home-grown star Kane if the Spanish giants really turned on the charm with Harry Hot Spur. Gentleman’s agreements between superstar players and senior club officials are more common than folk might think. There would be nothing written in Kane’s contract, for sure, but there may well be some kind of verbal deal in place between player and chairman.
