Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Eric Dier is unavailable to face West Ham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night through injury.

As reported on the club’s official Twitter account, the 24-year-old enforcer sustained a thigh strain during their 1-0 loss to Manchester City on Monday.

It is further reported that both Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose are continuing with their respective rehabilitations.

This is a fresh injury headache for manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has had to contend with a long list of blows this season.

OPINION

This is a big blow for Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino ahead of their clash with West Ham at the London Stadium on Wednesday, with Dier likely to have started in some capacity. The versatile enforcer has been playing in midfield on the whole for Spurs in the last two seasons, but he could well have been deployed at centre-back by Pochettino if fit. The Argentine is expected to make wholesale changes for the London derby – their second match against West Ham in two weeks – due to the fact they played just 48 hours ago against Manchester City. Their hectic schedule is set to continue into the weekend with an away clash against Wolves on Saturday evening, and Pochettino will have his work cut out rotating his squad and keeping his key players fresh. While attention will mostly be focused on the league and Europe, the Carabao Cup is a good chance to win some silverware, and fans will be well aware of that fact and expect a good performance on Wednesday.
