Tottenham are expected to axe Harry Winks from their starting XI for Saturday’s London derby against West Ham, according to the Guardian.

The newspaper claim Spurs are likely to make three changes to the line-up that beat Cardiff 1-0 before the international break.

The Guardian report fit-again Mousa Dembele, Ben Davies and Erik Lamela will replace Winks, the injured Danny Rose and Moussa Sissoko in the team, with Christian Eriksen starting on the bench after his recent stomach injury absence.

It would be a crushing blow for Winks if he were to follow his impressive display for England on Monday night with the club axe. With his confidence restored after a calendar year wrecked by ankle problems, the Spurs central midfielder badly needs to now be playing regularly for his club. It would be quite the kick in the teeth for the 22-year-old if Mauricio Pochettino drops him the first time that he can call again upon Mousa Dembele, who is fit again after missing the last two matches with a thigh injury. Winks was integral alongside Eric Dier and Ross Barkley in midfield in putting Spain to the sword on Monday night in a memorable performance that will go down in the annals. His tidy touch play and cleverness in tight areas helped England gain a foothold in midfield against Spain’s pass masters, and demonstrated again that he is the man for the big occasion.
