Salomon Rondon has been ruled out of the Premier League clash against Brighton on Saturday, despite featuring in training this week.

The news was confirmed by manager Rafa Benitez in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon.

Centre-back Ciaran Clark is also out but Paul Dummett should be available for selection.

Chris Waugh, a journalist from the Chronicle, quoted Benitez on his personal Twitter account.

OPINION

Newcastle just can’t catch a break but this must be a real case of Deja Vu for the  fans. Last season it was loan striker Islam Slimani who arrived injured and hardly played. This season it’s long-term Benitez target Rondon, who arrived injured and played a bit before hitting the missing list again. Meanwhile, former striker Aleksandar Mitrovic keeps firing in the goals for club and country. That’s looking like a big mistake from Benitez but fans will be hoping that Rondon is back for the next match. His side needs him, badly. Newcastle might have had the toughest fixtures of any club so far this season, but it doesn’t alter the fact that they’re rooted in the bottom three of the Premier League and still looking for their first win of the season. You have to think that January funds are essential if they want to stay in the top-flight but owner Mike Ashley will probably only dig deep if they’re still in deep trouble. That’s not a great way to live for Newcastle fans.
