Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is Rafa Benitez’s ideal signing for Newcastle United in the upcoming January transfer window, according to the Chronicle

The regional newspaper report that Benitez is a huge fan of the 22-year-old England international, who has been struggling for game time at Stamford Bridge this season.

The Chronicle claim however that a deal for the 6ft 3in colossus [Transfermarkt] is unlikely due to Newcastle already having the limit of two domestic loans, meaning a big-money permanent agreement would need to be reached with the Blues.

OPINION

There is little doubt that Loftus-Cheek would be a brilliant signing for Newcastle, and it is no surprise to hear that he is a priority target for Benitez. Central midfield has been a problem area for the Magpies this season so far, with Mo Diame not performing up to standard alongside Jonjo Shelvey. Having Loftus-Cheek take his place in that area would give Benitez an extremely strong partnership to build upon, and would no doubt help turn their fortunes around. That being said, this is not the area which needs most attention. Newcastle simply need to score more goals if they are to survive, and while Loftus-Cheek would no doubt bag a few from midfield, that means attacking reinforcements. A new striker, one ideally with Premier League experience, must be a priority. Another attacking player, either on the wings or just in behind, should be the next aim for Benitez. The good thing for fans is that the report does state Benitez is on the lookout for a new striker and number ten, meaning the Spaniard is on the right track.
