Kevin Keegan has sent a message on talkSPORT to Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley to “sell the club” and get out of Toon.

The Newcastle legend, who managed and played for the club with great success, passionately urged the Sports Direct tycoon to sever his ties with north-east giants after 11 years.

Asked by talkSPORT host Jim White at lunchtime on Friday what message he had for Ashley, Keegan replied with three words, “Sell the club”.

OPINION

You could hear the passion and anger in Keegan’s voice as he urged Ashley to sell up and go. If only it were that easy. Keegan’s words, as he promotes his autobiography across the land, were well-chosen ones. But they will mean little to the billionaire, whose only interest in Newcastle is how much money it can make him before he heads off into the sunset. The club have been up for sale, officially at least, for over a year, but a buyer has still not been found and reports this week have claimed Ashley intends to stay at least until the end of the season. Certainly, his attendance at the last two United matches and the highly-publicised midweek dinner with Rafael Benitez and the Newcastle players at a Gateshead restaurant, would suggest Ashley is planning to hang around for a while yet. The businessman won’t go until he receives an offer he believes is acceptable. He’s showed he has sticking power, if nothing else.
