Newcastle United had scouts in attendance watching the performance of AEK Athens attacker Anastasios Bakasetas during his club’s clash with Olympiakos on Sunday, according to Sport in a Storm.

The news website claim that the Magpies were watching on as the 25-year-old, who was crowned as a champion of the Greek top flight with his side last season, played the role of the hero as he netted a 90th minute header to secure a draw and a point in their league clash.

The 15 cap Greek international plays as a winger on either flank, an attacking midfielder, second striker or even as a centre forward, and has four goals in his 10 outings across all competitions this season.

Good move for Newcastle?

The Magpies look toothless in attack right now and they need some sort of spark to bring them out of their shells and start putting the opposition to the sword.

At 25-years-old, Bakasetas is hardly a spring chicken and as such is playing at the peak of his game right now, but the fact he is recognised by his country with 15 caps shows he has the talent to impress.

His versatility would make him a useful addition to the Newcastle squad, covering for the likes of Ayoze Perez, Joselu, Matt Ritchie and others, in a similar way that Yoshinori Muto has done for the first half of the season.

Still, there is no guarantee he would bring the talent Newcastle need, and it looks like another cut price signing for Rafael Benitez.

Likely to happen?

The probably low asking price for his capture is probably why Newcastle have been registering their interest, but at the moment it is unclear as to how the club will approach the future transfer windows.

He is probably one of many targets the Magpies have, and as such it is difficult to judge whether he is a top target or someone Benitez will look to as a second or third choice.
