Manchester United are likely to have reached an agreement for Zinedine Zidane to become their new manager, according to Richard Keys.

The beIN Sports anchor claimed on his personal Twitter account on Saturday morning that he is “more convinced than ever” that the ex-Real Madrid boss is heading to Old Trafford.

Keys claimed Jose Mourinho is likely to understand the situation as he was appointed at United after Louis van Gaal exited in similar circumstances.

OPINION

Keys does little to substantiate his claim that Zidane is set to be appointed by United, although the long-standing football host is well connected and has spent half a lifetime working in the game. There has been plenty of speculation in recent weeks that the French all-time great could be parachuted into the United post following a wretched start to the season at Old Trafford marked by discord, controversy, dreadful performances and mediocre results. Could Mourinho suffer the same fate as Van Gaal, who had no idea that he was heading for the exit until United had already briefed the news to the media? It would be somewhat ironic were the Portugese, one of the outstanding managers of his generation, to get the bullet in a similar way. Zidane’s availability and remarkable record at Real, who he quit after steering them to their fourth Champions League in five years in May, make him the outstanding contender for the post.
