Former Chelsea star Ruud Gullit has slammed the performance of striker Alvaro Morata after their 2-2 draw against Manchester United on Saturday, claiming that his teammates do not trust him.

Chelsea took the lead through Antonio Rudiger but United hit back with a double from Anthony Martial and looked on the verge of a huge win before Ross Barkley’s 96th-minute equaliser.

Gullit has now called into question Morata’s performance against the Red Devils, and questioned whether Hazard and Willian trust the Spain international.

Speaking on beIN SPORTS, he said: “How many chances did he have? They don’t come in positions that create anything for [Chelsea]. And you know what the worst part is – you can see that Willian and Hazard, they go all the time inside, because they don’t trust him.”

OPINION

This is a pretty scathing assessment from Gullit, not necessarily because he has laid into Morata, but simply because of what he is saying. The Spain international has struggled ever since his move to Stamford Bridge, that is clear for everyone to see. But for that to have led to his teammates struggling to trust him on the pitch would be a huge blow for him and his confidence. You can see where Gullit is coming from as well, with Hazard and Willian seemingly more willing to take the ball on themselves in harder positions than use Morata in a more favourable one. Moving forward that is not a viable relationship for Chelsea’s attackers to have, and it must be addressed as soon as possible. There have been rumours of Chelsea offloading Morata in January, and that is most certainly one possible solution. Bringing in a quality striker is key for the Blues if they want to challenge for the title, and Morata is definitely not doing the business right now.
