Everton have suffered a potential first-team blow after midfield enforcer Idrissa Gueye limped off during Senegal’s win over Sudan on Saturday, according to the Liverpool Echo

The regional newspaper report that the Toffees star was on the wrong end of a strong challenge in the second half and was withdrawn from the action with an ankle complaint.

The Echo claim that manager Marco Silva will be keen to check on his latest setback after the 29-year-old missed a couple of games earlier this term with a knee injury.

OPINION

Should Gueye’s injury end up putting him out of action for a few games this will be a significant blow for Everton. The Senegal international has been a key first-team player for the club since his arrival from Aston Villa in 2016, and they could really do without him suffering another injury. The Toffees look far more solid in the midfield area when Gueye is on the pitch, and they will no doubt struggle to produce the same kind of performances without him. Central midfield is not an area where the Toffees are particularly stocked, and it may be where Marco Silva attempts to strengthen in the January window. That being said, the return of summer signing Andre Gomes from injury should help alleviate their worries there, although he is a different kind of player to Gueye. This could also be much ado about nothing, and Gueye could have merely suffered a slight knock that will see him recover in time for their next match against Crystal Palace.
