Everton midfielder Tom Davies has confirmed that he is going to hold talks with senior figures at the club over his first team future as he looks to battle his way back from being dropped to the substitutes’ bench.

The 20-year-old has been a mainstay under manager Marco Silva with outings in six of the club’s nine Premier League matches, including being handed the armband for the three games before the victory over Crystal Palace.

However, Davies found himself going from captain to suddenly being dropped to an unused substitute, and while the youngster knows that rotation is important, he wants to talk things through to know how he can improve and become more of a regular again.

He told the Telegraph: “You want to play. So it makes sense to then speak to people and ask them what you have to do. Last season I did that and this season I am focusing on doing that again.

“Now there will be more rotation with three or four players who can play a position. Obviously I want to get back into the team so I will just train as hard as I can.”

Opinion

Some might think that Davies was unfortunate to find himself axed by Silva but anyone who watched the games he was captain would realise that he was lacking the required quality to remain in the side. He found himself replaced by Andre Gomes and while the Barcelona loanee was not totally at the races against Palace he did bring a certain quality to the starting XI that had been lacking with Davies in the side. The homegrown Toffees star is going to face a serious fight to force his way back into the reckoning now and while Silva might be tempted to rotate as the season progresses, it would be expected that when fully fit it is the Portuguese star, as well as the more defence minded Idrissa Gueye, who are going to be starting for Goodison Park outfit. With Morgan Schneiderlin another who is on the sidelines waiting for a chance to come back, Silva has some decent options at his disposal – and whatever talks Davies does have might not be enough to regain his place.
