Sky Sports pundit Tony Cascarino has drooled over Tottenham star Erik Lamela in a rave review, claiming the Argentine has been the club’s best player recently.

Lamela netted his fifth goal of the season on Saturday as Spurs battled to a 1-0 win over bitter rivals West Ham at the London Stadium, with the 26-year-old already having exceeded his tally of four from last term.

Cascarino has now taken notice of Lamela’s fantastic displays for Tottenham as he raved about his form after the win over the Hammers, highlighting Lamela’s emergence from being a big-money misfit to a key player for the club.

In a column for The Times, he said: “Erik Lamela has been Tottenham’s best player of the past month. He’s a gifted lad with a wonderful left foot. He was out for so long with injury that it is very impressive the way he has come back. He has the hunger and desire to go with his talent.

“During his early time with Spurs and that period out injured, he looked like a £30 million misfit, but no one would say that now. He scored on Saturday to show how crucial he’s been in Spurs’ start to the season. They haven’t been playing that well — Harry Kane is slightly off his game for example — and yet they keep winning. A lot of that is down to Lamela and Lucas Moura, who has also been excellent.”

OPINION

This is some big praise from Cascarino for Lamela, and praise which is thoroughly deserved. Lamela has clearly been one of Tottenham’s best players over the past month, and you could even go as far as to say he has been their best player so far this season. His constant goal threat and link-up play with teammates has seen him exceed last season’s tally for goals already, and it looks like he has returned to the kind of form which saw him earn that £30million move from Roma in 2013. The season before Tottenham bought him Lamela scored 15 goals in Serie A for Roma, and he is finally on course for a similar season for Spurs. You could see the confidence that he has at the moment on show against the Hammers, with Lamela dancing past players with ease and looking one step ahead of the opposition at all times. His driving runs always create chaos, and his cushioned header to open the scoring was delightful. All in all it was a brilliant display which should hopefully see him continue this form into their must-win Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.
