Arsenal boss Unai Emery is eyeing a summer swoop for Manchester United star Juan Mata, according to the Daily Star

The newspaper report that Emery is a big fan of the Spain international and is monitoring his situation at Old Trafford closely with Mata out of contract at the end of the season.

The Star claim that a summer move will depend on whether Emery believes his Arsenal side require more experience, and a swoop is likely tied to what happens regarding the future of midfielder Aaron Ramsey.

Mata, who is on £140,000-a-week at United [Total Sportek] played under Emery for three years at Valencia before his move to Chelsea in 2011.

Good move for Arsenal?

100%.

Mata is a highly-experienced Premier League performer who still belongs at the top level, and the Spaniard would undoubtedly improve this Arsenal squad.

The previous relationship between Emery and Mata is another factor which means this is a deal that makes perfect sense, for both club and player.

The fact that Mata would be available on a free again means this is a no-brainer for the Gunners should the opportunity arise.

Likely to happen?

At the moment, no.

Mata is reportedly keen to remain at Old Trafford, but is waiting on guarantees of first-team football under Jose Mourinho – or a new coach.

That means that the likely outcome at the moment is a new contract for Mata at United, and all the Gunners can do is be prepared if that does not occur.

You would think they would be in a good position if that situation does arise, with Emery knowing the player and Arsenal being on the up under the Spaniard.
