Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that West Ham midfielder Carlos Sanchez is scheduled to undergo surgery in two weeks’ time.

Sanchez, 32, was forced off the pitch in the Hammers’ 8-0 win against Macclesfield last month and has not played since.

The Mirror has since reported that he could miss the rest of the season with suspected medial ligament damage, and Pellegrini has announced that the Colombia international is still a fortnight away from being able to go under the knife.

“Carlos will need to wait a couple of weeks before he has the surgery he needs,” said Pellegrini on Thursday, as quoted on West Ham’s official website.

OPINION

It is not ideal for West Ham or for Sanchez to have this set-back as the former Aston Villa enforcer was signed in the summer to add a bit of steel to Pellegrini’s midfield. However he has not lasted long before a major injury blow that could see him ruled out for the rest of the campaign. Sanchez was obviously in Pellegrini’s first team plans before his injury. He had made six appearances across all competitions, starting in the defeats to Arsenal and Wolves. He has hardly been impressive but to lose the £4million summer signing for was is effectively going to be half of the two-year deal he recently signed is a real kick in the teeth. West Ham have probably wasted a lot of money on signing him and to pay his wages. It will be a surprise to see him stay at the London Stadium after next summer because the club may just want to cut their losses on him.
