A section of Newcastle United fans have taken to Twitter to slam Mohamed Diame for his performance in the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Diame, 31, had been solid for the Magpies before he fouled Anthony Martial on the edge of the penalty area in the second-half, which led to Juan Mata kick-starting the home side’s revival by scoring the resulting free-kick.

Some Magpies fans were furious with the Senegal international, with one saying that losing the two-goal lead was “100%” his fault.

OPINION

Poor Diame, he was playing ever so well but the former Hull midfielder’s lack of quality really showed in the second-half when he upended Martial on the edge of the penalty area when it really wasn’t warranted. The 31-year-old had performed very well up until that point and could have made amends for his error when he put a free-header wide just after Martial equalised. Newcastle fans have not held back in slamming the midfielder during the game, but it is definitely harsh to say that the blame entirely lies with him. This is a team game. You win, lose or draw as a team and not one person should be singled out for something like this. It was still an encouraging evening for the Tyneside club because they will return to the North East knowing that they can get back to winning ways after the international break. Brighton, Southampton, Watford and Bournemouth are Newcastle’s next four games and they are all winnable.
