Leeds United want to negotiate a January swoop to sign in-form Alaves attacker Ibai Gomez, according to Diario AS.

The Spanish news outlet claims that Gomez, 28, is keen on moving to the UK despite interest from other Spanish clubs, and Leeds could use his contract situation at Alaves to try and lure him away from La Liga.

It is understood that Gomez would be available for free at the end of the season when his deal expires so that could put the Whites in the driving seat when it comes to negotiations in the January transfer window.

The report adds that Gomez is in the form of his life at the moment with Alaves, who have been one of the biggest stories of La Liga so far this season as they currently sit second in the table, one point behind leaders Barcelona.

Good move for Leeds?

Marcelo Bielsa has been operated with a small squad of players at Elland Road this season and while results have been good, he could still do with adding extra players to his squad in January.

Without injuries, Leeds could be well clear at the top of the Championship table and Gomez would be a nice replacement for someone like Pablo Hernandez on the right-wing if he is sidelined again.

The former Athletic Bilbao attacker is in great form and would be available for next to nothing, so it would make perfect sense for the Whites to sign him up when they can.

Likely to happen?

Bielsa knows Gomez well having managed him at Bilbao and Leeds have a strong Spanish connection at the moment thanks to director of football Victor Orta and the way he has recruited in his time at Elland Road.

AS reports that Real Sociedad are also interested in the Alaves winger, which could be a problem for the Yorkshire giants, but it is still October and probably too soon to say for certain that this is a move that could happen.
